Circulation in the new Salt Lake City Library
“Since we move in Time, through a Sequence of Spaces, we experience a space in relation to where we’ve been and where we anticipate going.” Chings notes. The new Salt Lake City Library is an excellent example of a spacious, broad and direct circulation. This public structure offers a great circulation plan that works perfect in either direction, has important points of converging, and express clearly changes of levels. The building response to context, views and program disposition, the structure and the roof talks about a spiral circulation, with balconies and hallways that looks to a principal space or patio.
The new Civic Plaza identifies the Library as an iconic in the space; it also offers four accessible facades and became the first phase of the circulation system. The atrium organized the spaces, defines zones and articulates the program with each level. This is a complete library with all different aspects, Store, Electronic Information Center, audio visual collection, auditorium, meeting rooms, book sales, children’s library, meeting rooms, newspapers, magazines, offices, maintenance etc. All this are located in different level, which are easy to the public to reach and locate it.
Circulation is a very important element in construction and design, this have an aesthetic and functional value in every building. A library is a place full of knowledge and information; it should be a dynamic civic resource that promotes FREE and OPEN ACCESS to information, materials and services to all the people. Circulation should work exactly the same in a building, is more than stairs, hallways and ramps, circulation should improve the quality of life in a space.
